A Dirty Wind Blows | Brett Hostetler

I first came to make art by studying it and exploring its origins. I developed a passion for proccess and material by experimenting though trial and error. Incorporating and repurposing found material became a way for me to reference a variety of concepts, like value and proportion. At the heart of my work is editing and reworking until the dialog reaches a particular dilema. I think and plan before I start working, but once I have started, I am acting and responding to the conversation within the painting.
Unimaginable things happen in the process of creating. I use this as my compass along with a background of experimenting with material and gesture to find a balance and movement that convey the right attitude. The work is thick and layered with material and oil paint, often times worked on for years the paintings develop a relishing purity of age that never stop revealing new depths
