Diego is a well known artist who sells Mola’s in the Balboa neighborhood of Panama City, Panama in a cooperativa artisan market operated by the Guna Yala tribe, sometimes spelled Kuna Yala. The market is on Calle Balboa in a barn-like structure called Centro Nacional de Artesanias. The Kuna Yala are from the comarca (semi-autonomous territory) on the northeast Caribbean coast of Panama between the canal and Colombia. Diego is arguably the best-known mola designer and artist today. He specializes in the traditional geometric patterns and animals such as thunderbirds that reflect the paleolithic artwork from the pre-Colombian era. Diego is gay but traditional Guna Yala society has a very different world view than the Western world and cultural concepts are not always an exact walk across; what we would call gay or straight are both considered perfectly normal in the Guna Yala, so there’s not the concept of it being something different or as an “other”. There’s no difference in the interpretation of the art of their world-view because of their belief in the normalcy of all preferences, so unlike western culture, one won’t find any cultural politics in their art. Molas are constructed as fabric appliqué where each color is on the same level and there is a great deal of detail to express the art and their society–animals, fish, birds, abstract designs, etc.

My work explores the idea of synthesis. I manipulate contradicting spatial elements such as flatness and illusion to suggest a disoriented context, where the dichotomy becomes an integrated visual reality. The narrative is based on my own experiences of living in the United States for seventeen years, and concerns dilemmas of my cultural identity. I wonder how one can truly assimilate into an environemtn he/she is not from. I feel mixed emotions of pessimism and optimisim. I am interested in the psychological aspects of how one processes new environments and culture. In the constant adjustment, I have realized feelings of perplexity, incongruity, and obscurity, are always a part of my psyche. Ultimately, I want to believe that different cultures can be hybridized and become a unique alternative one. In this realm, I hope to find a sense of equilibirium.

Masako Miki is a native of Japan and now lives and works in Berkeley. She has exhibited throughout the Bay Area. Recently, she was a residency artisit at Vermont Studio Center and Wassaic Project in New York, and a nominee for the 2010 SECA art award from SFMOMA. She is a recipient of an individual Artist Award from The Santo Foundation. Her work is available at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, Park Life, the Swarm Gallery, and the Bay Area Visual Arts Network. Currently, she has been working on a public art project for city of Berkeley , and her solo exhibition is coming up in April 2012 at Swarm Gallery, Oakland, She received her MFA from San Jose State University, She is an adjunct faculty at Evergreen Valley College and De Anza College.
